 W OMAD New Zealand 2010takes place at New Plymouth’s Brooklands Park and TSB Bowl from 12-14 March with artists hailing from almost every corner of the globe – Africa, the Middle East,Europe, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand – WOMAD New Zealand 2010 is truly an international event.Heading the line-up of music for the three-day festival is Ethiopiques featuring Ethiopian music legend Mahmoud Ahmed (2007 BBC Radio World Music Award –Africa winner) together with a 10-piece band. Star of the Buena Vista Social Club, Eliades Ochoa from Cuba is also confirmed for WOMAD New Zealand 2010, along with French gypsy dancehall punksters Babylon Circus; America’s Hypnotic Brass Ensemble featuring eight horn-playing brothers and“the voice of the Sahara”, Mariem Hassan. Also from Africa comes Dub Colossus, an Ethiopia/UK project featuring Ethiojazz star Feleke Hailu, while from Palestine/Israel comes one of the most beautiful voices in the Middle East, Amal Murkus. 2 of 3 pages Eclectic American band Calexico, Scottish singer Eddi Reader (ex Fairground Attraction), legendary accordion player Mairtin O’Connor (Ireland) and Spain’s vibrant Ojos be Brujo also feature for the festival. Other international acts include Australia’s Blue King Brown, Dutch theatre with De Stijle, Want; Gochag Askarov from Azerbaijan (recognised by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the world’s verbal and non-verbal heritage); Algeria’s Kamel al Haraachi Chaabi Music; Finnish master musicians Lepisto and Lehti, Mexico-based Nortec Collective; seminal ska group Skatalites (Jamaica); Ross Daly and Ensemble from Greece, and DJ Nickodemus (USA) and the Gyuto Monks from Tibet/Australia return to WOMAD. A solid line-up of New Zealand performers includes the acclaimed NZTrio, collaborating on a special project Lepisto and Lehti exclusively for WOMAD; along with Northland reggae band 1814; songstress Anna Coddington; The Bellbirds (featuring Don McGlashan and Victoria Kelly together with Sandy Mill and Sean Donnelly); House of Shem; Iva Lamkum; LA Mitchell; Ladi6; Pacific Curls and kappa haka performance from Te-Whanau-A-Apanui. Taranaki Arts Festival Trust (TAFT) Chief Executive Suzanne Porter says WOMAD is a true celebration of world music, arts and dance and an opportunity to recognise the diversity of performance art in the world. As well as a stunning line-up of music on the seven stages, WOMAD New Zealand 2010 also features artists in conversation, live cooking demonstrations and workshops by artists, a global village, sustainable village, Kidzone and the option to camp at the adjacent racecourse or stay marae-style in the TSB Stadium. New in 2010 are special seniors viewing platforms at the three main stages with seating, shade and free water sponsored by TSB Bank. Lepisto & Lehti (Finland) Finnish master musicians Markku Lepistö and Pekka Lehti stunned and held a vast concert audience in awe at the 2004 Helsinki Festival when they introduced their unlikely and unprecedented union of double bass and accordion. It was especially surprising because the pair came from such diversely different musical backgrounds. Markku has been playing Ostrobothnian folk music on accordion since the age of five. He graduated at the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department before joining the hugely successful Finnish folk music band Värttinä in 1998. His diversity extends to a folk-orientated solo recording career, and performing concerts with the klezmer group Doina Klezmer. Coming from the significantly different musical worlds of jazz, fusion and funk, Pekka enjoys the reputation as one of Finland’s top bass players, having worked with such leading bands Burn!, ZetaBoo, Dalindeo and The JPs. He also operates and produces albums for his own recording label, Aito. Despite this, traditional folk music and its extensions remain a very important part of Pekka’s musical life, which led to his unusual collaboration with Markku. The duo has since become performance favourites, presenting feisty new twists to material from both of their individual repertoires, and injecting pure traditional folk dances with vigour and youthful spirit. Casella” di L’AquilaPRIMO CORSO SPERIMENTALE DI ORGANETTO Docente: Danilo Di Paolonicola La tradizione popolare è una miniera di sapienza e cultura, uno scrigno da cui attingere per strutturare il proprio presente e dare senso al proprio futuro. Con questa convinzione parte a L’Aquila, al Conservatorio “A.Casella” il primo corso libero di organetto. Insegnante Danilo Di Paolonicola, pluripremiato musicista di organetto e profondo conoscitore della tradizione di questo strumento. Per partecipare al corso, aperto a tutti, è necessario compilare una domanda di ammissione, (segreteria@consaq.it – 0862.2122), corredata del pagamento di un contributo di 25 euro entro e non oltre il 12 febbraio. L’ammissione al corso è subordinata al superamento di un piccolo esame di ammissione commisurato al livello di conoscenze musicali del candidato. Al termine del corso, che prevede una quindicina di lezioni fino a giugno, sarà rilasciato un attestato di frequenza. | Das Orchester der Harmonika-Freunde Grasberg wurde bereits im Jahre 1976 von Hermann Renken gegründet und nannte sich dazumals Harmonika-Freunde Otterstein mit manchmal bis zu 20 aktiven Mitgliedern. 1988 wurde das Orchester unbenannt und tritt bis dato unte dem Namen Harmonika-Freunde Grasberg auf. Aus gesundheitlichen Gründen trat ihr Leiter Hermann Renken zurück und die Leitung übernahm Dieter Schnabel mit der musikalischen Unterstützung von Ulla Livings-Schwedler. Nun sucht der Verein einen neuen Leiter/Dirigenten.  Seit bereits 40 Jahren spielt das Ensemble Franc Mihelic und ist weit über alle Grenzen hinaus bekannt. Im Jahre 1970 hat man sich dann zu einer Gruppe zusammengetan und gründete das Ensemble Franc Mihelic mit Franc als Leiter der Gruppe, Bernarda, Milan, Silvo und Franc Lovsin. Der musikalische Erfolg ließ nicht lange auf sich warten und dem Ensemble Franc Mihelic gelang der große Durchbruch. Schnell bekannt durch Rundfunk und Fernsehn in Slowenien und im benachbarten Ausland wurde die Gruppe neben dem großen Slavko Avsenik zu den Königen der Volksmusik ernannt. Francs Eigenkompositionen, seine gefühlvollen Lieder und sein Spiel auf abwechselnd 7 Harmonikas lassen auch heute immer wieder viele Herzen der Zuhörer schneller schlagen. Bernardas Bruder und Gesangspartner Franc Lovsin musste sich 2004 von der Gruppe aus gesundheitlichen Gründen verabschieden, wurde aber von Ivan Hudnik, einem hervorragenden Sänger ersetzt. Am 5. | The Fourth Annual Competition invites young Texas players to compete for $1000 cash, recording sessions and other prizes. The finalists will perform at the 21st annual Accordion Kings & Queens festival June 5 at Houston’s Miller Outdoor Theatre. Texas Folklife announces its fourth annual “Big Squeeze” accordion contest for up-and-coming Texas musicians, 21 years of age or younger. You may have seen “The Big Squeeze” film about the contest on PBS, or seen and heard the many stories on the news and in the papers statewide about the amazing young contestants these past three years. They are looking for great players in any genre of accordion-based music, including Cajun; German, Czech, and Polish polka; Tejano, Conjunto and Norteño; Western; and Zydeco. This year the contest goes on the road to go meet the talent. Auditions will be held throughout Texas and finalists will perform at Texas Folklife’s highly acclaimed “Accordion Kings & Queens” festival at Houston’s Miller Outdoor Theatre on June 5th, 2010, where the “Big Squeeze” winner will be selected. The “Big Squeeze” 2010 auditions sites are: • San Antonio: February 5th at Casbeers in partnership with Conjunto Heritage Taller; • Rio Grande Valley: February 8th through the 12th (La Joya ISD, Edcouch Elsa High School, and the Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center); • Austin: February 28th at the Mexican American Cultural Center; • Dallas: March 6th at the Latino Cultural Center; • Schulenburg: March 13th at Sengelmann Hall; • Houston: March 27th at Talento Bilingue and March 28th at The Big Easy Club in partnership with the National Zydeco Foundation; and • San Angelo: April 3rd at San Angelo Museum of Fine Art. The “Big Squeeze” is open to non-professional accordionists 21 and younger. Contestants will be judged by a panel of esteemed music professionals on song interpretation, technical skill, originality, execution, and stage presence. Interested players are encouraged to reserve an audition slot at a venue in their region by contacting Texas Folklife. Those who cannot attend an audition may also mail or e-mail their entries to arrive at Texas Folklife by April 5, 2010. Semifinalists selected from the audition and mailed in tapes will be given travel stipends to take part in the Semi Finals held on May 1st at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. At that time, up to four finalists will be awarded $300 each and an expense-paid trip to Houston to compete before an enthusiastic audience of 6,000 accordion fans at the “Accordion Kings & Queens” on June 5th. The “Big Squeeze” 2010 grand-prize winner will be selected at the concert by the panel of judges with help from the audience. The grand prize winner will receive a prize package valued at $3,000, including a $1000 cash prize, travel expenses to Houston, a brand new Hohner accordion, and a day-long recording session at the historic SugarHill Recording Studios in Houston, as well as promotional support from SugarHill, Hohner, Inc. and Texas Folklife, and other professional opportunities. “The “Big Squeeze” contest allows us to fulfill our mission to preserve and celebrate Texas culture in a very real way,” says Texas Folklife Executive Director Nancy Bless. “By supporting these young musicians we encourage them to continue playing the accordion, an instrument that is so central to Texas traditional music that it’s been dubbed, ‘the national instrument of Texas.’ It is so exciting to see a new generation carry on this heritage and to see the thrill that their mastery and extraordinary talent give to audiences.” The “Big Squeeze” is supported by the members and Board of Texas Folklife, the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, the City of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board, the Houston Endowment, the Cogburn Family Foundation, the Still Water Foundation, the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division and by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.   Konzertina zum Kaffee (21. März 2010) In der Gegend von Bayreuth gibt es eine gut gepflegte Konzertina-Tradition! Hier handelt es sich um die "großen", rechteckigen Konzertinas (86-108 Töne), weniger um die "kleinen", sechseckigen (40-Töne). Das Konzertinaspielertreffen von Altenplos findet inzwischen jedes Jahr jeweils am ersten Sonntag im November statt. Eingeladen sind alle aktiven Konzertinaspieler und Liebhaber von Konzertina- und Bandonioninstrumenten aus nah und fern. Die Veranstaltung wird organisiert von der Beratungsstelle für Volksmusik in Franken (Bayreuth) und hat zum Ziel, in einer familiären Atmosphäre die Konzertinaspieler, ob alt oder jung, zusammenzubringen, Kontakte unter den Musikern zu verbessern und musikalisch einen Erfahrungsaustausch zu ermöglichen. Das zum erstenmal 1995 in Trebgast, dann seit 1996 regelmäßig in Altenplos durchgeführte Treffen geht indirekt auf eine frühere Initiative von Alfred Völkel zurück, nämlich auf das oberfränkische Konzertinaspieler-Treffen vom 14. März 1980 in Helmbrechts (im Frankenwald), wo sich zum erstenmal drei Dutzend Spieler einfanden. Absicht war es, für das Studio Nürnberg des Bayerischen Rundfunks noch einmal einen Querschnitt zu einer – wie es damals schien – verschwindenden Volksmusiktradition zu dokumentieren und festzuhalten.   14/15 March 2010 - Solo Zydeco Productions has been producing cultural music festivals since 1997. Beginning with the Liberty County Zydeo and Crawfish festival in Liberty, TX.In 1998 Solo Zydeco Productions moved to Humble, TX and began Zydecopalooza! That festival ran for three years along with the Clifton Chenier Hall of Fame Zydeco music awards festival. Since then, Solo Zydeco Productions has grown, now producing three major festivals including The Solo Zydeco Music festival, The Soul and Blues Festival and the Festival de la Cosecha. The 2010 Solo Zydeco Music festival is scheduled to take place at the beautiful Humble Civic Center in Humble, Texas. Participating artists: Jeffery Broussard & The Creole Cowboys features the accordion mastery and soulful vocals of front man Jeffery Broussard, from the legendary band, Zydeco Force. The band delivers great, pack-the-floor renditions of Creole classics as well as their own brand of contemporary Zydeco. Early Creole music, as played by legends Canray Fontenot on fiddle and Jeffery’s father, accordion player Delton Broussard, is experiencing a well-deserved resurgence of interest in Louisiana today. Brad was not one for zydeco music. He then mastered playing the accordion at the age of 15. At the age of 17 after graduating high school, Brad then realized it was time to start his own band. Brad then formed his band (Brad Randell & The Zydeco Ballers) they were then and now very hot at trail rides. People say he is the “Crunk” man in zydeco. Brad adds his own unique sound with the Ballers, his band entertains as well as any other band in the world. His first recording, Move That Thang, was released by Bad Weather Records in July of 1998. (Photo bottom/right) Chris Ardoin - The name Ardoin has been “legend” within the Creole/Cajun music community for over a century. Amede and Alphonse “Boi Sec” Ardoin are two Creole musicians whose music influenced many, if not all, Creole/Cajun artist’s music heard today. Chris Ardoin, the next generation of many Ardoin musicians, has his own unique sound that has dancers and music lovers craving him, packing Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas clubs, churches, dance halls, trailrides, and festivals. He blends the traditional Creole music with r&b, rock, jazz, blues, country, and gospel. Chris was born and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana where he still resides today and attends McNeese St. University. He started playing the accordion at the young age of four and by the age of nine he had already played Carnegie Hall in New York. And by fourteen he had performed for over 500,000 people at the Monument in Washington D.C. Though he is only in his mid twenties, this 5′11″, 205lb man is a well seasoned and respected musician in all genres of music. A product of the efforts of three devoted harmonica organizations, the Cardinal State Harmonica Club, the Capitol Harmonica Club and Harmonica Plus of Newport News, the annual gathering offers much to enjoy. | The diatonic accordion (named as ‘concertina’ in Portugal) is an instrument created in the first half of XIX century, later worked to perfection, by several European instrument makers and today it echoes memories coming from a different musical ambience: a time before the record and the radio inventios. But it continues being a ‘dream machine’ ready to invent possible futures and making senses. Artur Fernandes, Filipe Cal, Filipe Ricardo and Francisco Miguel had a dream to look for and worked their musical performance skills meanwhile they studied the possibilities of taking this instrument away from folklore music ways, accepting what then was known as ” the concertina will”, but writing a new music for it. This was the time that led the band to its name and to its first record, Dancas Ocultas, with a reportory on which predominate Artur Fernandes compositions. After that, came a adventuring time, less ingenuous and more artistic, resulting from the continuous contacts with other performers, from experiences on stage, from the first travels and partnerships, motivating the change of the group into a sharing creativity nucleus and leading to the recording of ” Ar” the second record which affirms the beginning of a self musical grammar and shows some technical innovations like the use of a specially built “bass concertina”. Since then the band has been experiencing the links between that musical grammar and a more universal and trans-cultural view of the musical phenomenon as well as the contemporaneous cultural ways. This concept allowed the band to often perform within scenic arts, namely in Paulo Ribeiro choreographies for which the band composed original music , as well as the repertoire of Pulsar, its third record. Sound, rhythm and harmony between the past and the future, making sense, in a dialog with contemporary aesthetic. Jorge P.  Founded in Los Angeles in 1997 by the expatriate King, Flogging Molly got its start and its name from a local bar called Molly Malone's where the band played and grew and laid down the blueprint for its eventual success. As every member of Flogging Molly will emphatically explain, there were no predetermined expectations for the band's sound. From night to night playing to a packed house at Molly Malone's, the sound evolved organically. Traditional Celtic instruments like violin, mandolin and accordion blended seamlessly with grinding guitars and pounding drums.
