 Video: Joe Burke's Farewell Tunes 2019, by Carl Hession who wrote: I knew Joe for over 50 years, and traveled all over the country with him after we won The All Ireland Trio ( with Kathleen Collins on Fiddle ).After I moved to Cork to study music we lost contact, although I would come home for some of his concerts. Joe was an unbelievable musician, a thorough gentleman, and a very, very witty person who was tremendous company. Rest in peace, Joe. The Irish Examiner wrote: President of Ireland Michael Higgins leads tributes to the ‘distinguished and influential’ accordion player. “The news of the death of Joe Burke, distinguished and influential accordion player, will have saddened countless music lovers and fans of traditional Irish music, at home in Ireland and much further afield,” President Higgins said. “His legacy, not only the great archive of his music but also the love for music that he kindled among countless young musicians, will continue to inspire. Sabina and I send our condolences to Ann Conroy Burke, to his family and friends, and to all those whose hearts he touched.” Joe Burke, who was originally from Co Galway, was aged 81 years at the time of his death and had performed and recorded music for over 50 years, being named traditional musician of the year in 1970 and 1997. Kieran Hanrahan of RTECeiliHouse wrote on February 22: We’re greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Joe Burke. An iconic leader in Irish traditional music for many decades, he was a pioneering accordion player and a hugely entertaining and engaging person. Our condolences to Anne and the extended Burke family. Rest in peace Joe. Midwest Radio USA wrote 22 February: Tributes paid following the death of master accordion player from Galway Tributes have been paid following the death of one of Galway’s most revered traditional musicians Joe Burke. A native of Kilnadeema in East Galway, the 81-year-old was an incredible accordion player. He performed and recorded music for over five decades and was acclaimed by audiences worldwide for his style and technique. He was also proficient on the fiddle, tin whistle, flute and uilleann pipes, but was renowned for his mastery of the button accordion. Among his many awards was the AIB traditional musician of the year 1997. He was a founding member of the Leitrim Ceili Band in 1956 and toured the US in 1961. The Irish Traditional Music Archive paid tribute to Burke, saying he will be "forever remembered as one of the most influential accordion players of his time". |

 Accordions Worldwide sends congratulations to John Kirkpatrick (accordion, melodeon & concertina player) who was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2021 New Year’s Honours List (UK) for services to folk music.The MBE is awarded for an outstanding achievement or service to the community. This will have had a long-term, significant impact and stand out as an example to others. Those receiving the accolades are announced a few days before the end of the year and around the Queen's state birthday. During the 2021 Covid-19 lockdowns John plans to perform live online concerts every few weeks. His next concert will be held on January 24th, 2021 at 7.30pm GMT, where he will play tunes and songs from his CD’s “Morris On”, "Sheepskins", "The Duck Race", “Plain Capers” and many more.. Um musikalisch auf der Mundharmonika fit zu bleiben und sein Niveau zu halten oder zu verbessern, ist regelmäßiges Training sehr wichtig. Dieses Online-Angebot wendet sich an Mundharmonikaspieler/innen, die über Grundkenntnisse auf der chromatischen Harmonika verfügen und diese ausbauen bzw. trainieren wollen. Zuerst wird die Basis wie Mundform, Atmung und Körperhaltung bearbeitet. Die Teilnehmer werden ihre Grundlagen auf der chromatischen Mundharmonika verbessern, wie beispielsweise die Atemtechnik, Sprünge und Treffsicherheit. Dies wird anhand einfacher Literatur geübt, sodass jede/r das neu erlernte gleich ausprobieren und anwenden kann sowie Spielsicherheit gewinnt. In dem Workshop zeigen wir darüber hinaus, wie man die Ventile austauscht, Löseabstände einstellt und die eigene Mundharmonika pflegt und stimmt. Das sind bedingt inspirierende oder befreiende Vorgaben, die sich belastend durch das ganze Umfeld ziehen. Agenturen, Künstler_innen, Spielstätten, Techniker_innen, Medienarbeiter_innen und viele mehr sehen sich mit einer lange anhaltenden Planungsunsicherheit und zunehmend mehr als suboptimalen, im Wortsinn irrealen Rahmenbedingungen konfrontiert. Wobei das Leben und die Kultur auf diesem Planeten seit jeher und stets dynamische, facettenreiche Prozesse waren und sind. Aber auch andere Instrumentalisten, vor allem auch Gitarrist*innen und Holzbläser, sind herzlich willkommen. Bitte teilen Sie uns mit der Anmeldung mit, ob Sie bereits Erfahrung im Zusammenspiel mit anderen haben, wie lange Sie Ihr Instrument spielen und ob Sie Unterricht darauf hatten oder noch haben. Auch würden wir gern wissen, welches Ihr Instrument für den Workshop ist und ob Sie ggf. noch weitere Instrumente spielen. Mit Konstantin Reinfeld und Frank Haunschild werden zwei Dozenten präsentiert, die mit fachlicher Expertise und großem pädagogischen Geschick musikalische Themen anleiten und ausarbeiten können.  2021 marks an important milestone for Hohner and the harmonica community. It is the 125th Anniversary of the iconic 1896 Marine Band Harmonica! As one of the first production musical instruments with a celebrity endorsement, the Marine Band 1896 may just be the longest running serial production model in history. To celebrate, Hohner are releasing 3 different commerative models. The traditional wooden comb has been lacquered in the original colors for the sought after and distinctive, classic look. Each version relates back to the original design with its “Mouse Ear” tabs and pre-war badge with the six-pointed star. |

 The 38th Orkney Folk Festival will be held online from 27th to 30th May, 2021 in Scotland.Following the cancellation of the 2020 event due to Covid-19, organisers are delighted to confirm that the vast majority of artists scheduled to be part of the 2020 festival, will instead appear in the 2021 event. Twenty-two artists including a strong Scottish contingent will perform, complimented by leading artists from Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, India, the USA, England, Shetland, and of course Orkney’s own thriving local scene.  The closing date for the American Accordionists' Association (AAA) 2021 Elsie M. Bennett Composition Competition for Aspiring Composers has been extended to February 15th, 2021.Elsie M. Bennett was the driving force behind the AAA’s Composers Commissioning Committee, and was successful in getting the most famous of contemporary composers to write for the accordion. Among them were Robert Russell Bennett, Paul Creston, Robert Baksa, Lucas Foss, Alexander Tcherepnin, and so many more. A complete list is included on the AAA website at ameraccord.com. You can also see a list of previous winners. This competition is in her memory and the AAA encourages contemporary composers to include writing for the accordion in their repertoire. | The Louise Jallu Quartet will give a free concert at the Théâtre de Caen entitled “Jazz in the Foyers” on February 6th, 2021 at 5pm. The program is organised by Michel Dubourg for the Caen Theatre. Bandoneonist Louise Jallu performs a new project dedicated to Astor Piazzolla whose centenary of birth is celebrated in 2021. “This reinterpretation of the Argentine bandoneonist's compositions is between jazz and tango, between reverence and irreverence.” The quartet includes Louise Jallu (accordion), Karsten Hopchapfel (violin), Grégoire Letouvet (piano) and Alexandre Perrot (double bass). The tunes, comprising sessions standards in all the main genres (even mazurkas and waltzes), are grouped in medleys of two or three, and are performed that way on the companion 2-CD sets. The musical notation is the typical single-line, bare-bones version. The recorded performances, by musicians playing accordion, banjo, concertina, fiddle, flute, uilleann pipes, etc, in various combinations, are not necessarily most sophisticated musically, but they have plenty of energy and are well suited to their intended use.
